I wanted to pass on the good news of the day.......tests results indicate surgery was successful...lymph nodes are clear and the margins around the melanoma are clear. YAHOOOOOOO!!!! I am so blessed.
This morning I went to the doctor to have the bolster removed. The doctor said he was in the surgery (my surgeon is on vacation). He was very gentle as he removed the stitches and such as he knew my scalp was still sensitive.
As mentioned yesterday I forgot to explain last week that I had a bolster attached to my scalp. At the time of surgery, the surgeon applied a dressing called a “bolster”. A bolster is a type of dressing that is sewn on top of a skin graft. The dressing had to stay in place until my post op visit. It applies some pressure. It is made of vaseline gauze and tape. So my head felt a bit one-sided this past week.
The doctor showed me a picture of what my scalp looks like now...better than last week, but still not pretty. He thought the skin graft looked very good, but of course I have to be very careful. I have to keep it covered with vaseline for a few more weeks. After Thursday I can wash my hair again, but no scrubbing!
The hard news to hear was that the melanoma was very large and deep (explains the hole in my head) and considered stage 3. Now the doctors need to consult with oncology to determine what, if anything, other than follow up visits are needed. Also time to ensure I have a dermatological full body exam yearly (have never had one).
Feel like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders (not just my scalp) in so many ways. Had a wonderful lunch with my BFF on the way home. Now you know I need a nap!
Take care. Counting my blessings. Chat soon. Marie
