I have been fighting a cold and allergies for over a week. Most days I feel like I'm winning the battle with lots of OTC products. Everyone I talk to has something and going in/out of the nursing home does not help (the change of season illnesses). I know I'm tired as I took two power naps this week and I have not had a nap in almost two years. I usually fall back to old fashioned remedies when I head to bed at night. What do you do? Papa says I'm freezing him out, but the heat has been on for several weeks, just not as high as he would like it. And since he is very sedentary he is feeling the chill. I believe in sweatshirts and blankets when just hanging out. I can't sleep if the heat is blasting. He has centralized heat and individual room electric baseboard heat. He's keeping the heat on in his room so I can keep the rest of the house comfortable. Plus, it has been warm during the days so the heat is not coming on as much.
I'm going to my high school reunion today. We have never had one although I graduated 40 years ago. WOW - some days I still can't believe it was 40 years ago. Other days it feels more than a lifetime ago. I have to admit I'm a bit nervous and some old insecurities have popped up. I was not a popular girl in school, but had friends. I did not belong to any particular crowd, but tried to be nice to all. I was a bit shy and not very confident. I did stand my ground when I needed to, but was too busy traveling back and forth to school (I lived in one part of Boston and the school was in another part) to worry about much else. Our class was split between college focus and business focus. I was definitely business focused and went to work as soon as I was eligible. In my junior year, the school helped us in the program get jobs at companies around Boston (not sure if the schools do this anymore), but it was a good way to get professional experience and earn school credit. I stayed with the company (doing several different types of jobs) for almost seven years before jumping into other adventures. The 70s were the height of disco music, platform shoes and big hair. I just looked at 40 things turning 40 in 2016 and laughed at some of them. Here is a link if you are interested in checking it out: mentalfloss.com/article/74131/40-things-turning-40-2016.
I will say I'm a little nervous about today, but I'm also looking forward to connecting again. The life coach in me is excited about today and seeing these women, 98% of whom, I have not seen in 40 years. The observer part of me will be on high alert as I travel by the T and watch all the people. I can already feel energy building. Have you been to a reunion? Any nervousness? Did you have any expectations? I'll let you know how it goes...perhaps a mid-week blog.
Overall good week for papa as his big braces were removed. He has one small brace on the left knee (the one more damaged) and will stay in wheelchair for a bit longer. He is transitioning to the walker and has exercises to do every day to help with the transition. He still has home PT for another week or so and then we'll see what happens. It will definitely be easier to transport him as he gets stronger.
I don't know about you, but even having the land line on the "do not call" list does not stop all the calls. They have definitely slowed down a bit, but I have taken to answering the phone "this call is being monitored, how may I help you?" It usually results in a hang up or if they stay on the phone (saying nothing) I just say, the call is being traced and the police notified. That usually gets the hang up. I do love the calls that ask for my mother and then say there is something wrong with her computer. I usually laugh out loud and say, "that's really funny since there are no computers in this house." Again, hang up. How do you handle these annoying calls?
As I have said previously, I do not discuss politics in this blog and I mean to keep it this way. The only thing I will say is that as an American citizen I value my right to vote and I have not missed an election since I turned 18. I do not care if it's national or local elections I vote. I have already voted via absentee ballot in Virginia. I hope you exercise your right to vote. If you don't vote you can't have impact and you definitely can't complain about anything.
I don't know where the days went this past week, but I think I only read 10 pages in a book. I did catch up on newspapers and magazines though so that's progress. I need to get back on schedule soon. I have 25 books piled on the bench to read one of these days. What are you reading these days?
I'm going to end it here today. I hope you have a wonderful week. Take care. Chat soon. Marie
